I learned something new today, the F-35 has 3 different varients for different branches.

F-35A Lightning II doesn't have VTOL, it has CTOL (Conventional Take-Off Landing). In place of the VTOL fans in the center of the fuselage is the mid air refueling probe port. This varient is going to the Air Force in 2011.

F-35B Lightning II has STVOL (Short Take Off Vertical Landing), this one is going to the Marines in 2014.

F-35C Lightning II has a CATOBAR, in other words it has a landing hook for landing on carriers. Obviously this varient is going to the Navy in 2016.

Also, the F-35 can carry the Aim-132 ASRAAM which are projected to replace the Aim-9 Sidewinder. What I find impressive is the fact that the F-35 does not have a HUD, it instead has a HMDS (Helmet Mounted Display System). It also has a cockpit speech recognition system, allowing you to control and operate the aircraft by voice input.

Sadly though, the Air Force might replace the F-16C and possibly the F-15C/D and E with the F-35
